A book cover was designed for Stephen Crane's book The Red Badge of Courage keeping in mind the strong themes that are represented throughout the book: patriotism, war, and courage. Throughout the main characters journey as a civil war soldier, he finds himself dwelling on the idea that you need to be injured in war to become a hero. This connection of pride and injury is represented on the cover by using medical gauze to form the American flag imagery.
